[Gnewsense-dev] gNewsense 4 alpha review

I am also interested in helping with the project. Keep up the great
work.

So far version 4 alpha is working great. Only bugs so far are:
no Iceweasel (temporarily using Debians), no libreoffice or openoffice,
and the desktop-base seems to be missing (assuming this is the standard
Debian package, which is nothing more than wallpaper and dressing).

Net install with openbox is fantastic. Somehow, seems lighter and more
responsive the Debian net install with openbox.

Will we receive regular updates, or only version releases ie: 4.1, 4.2
etc...?

Kindest Regards,
TJ

I'm still figuring out Iceweasel, LibreOffice is currently building,
desktop-base version 7.0.3gnewsense2 is available in the repository.
Are you using archive.gnewsense.org (beta.gnewsense.org is deprecated).

Glad you like it. We've not added performance patches, so I wonder what
causes the improved responsiveness.

The repository will sync daily with Debian's, although the packages we
modify will lag a bit. There will be minor releases of the installer
and live images if there's a good reason for them.

Yes, I am using archive.gnewsense.org.

Tried to reinstall desktop-base 7.0.3gnewsense2 with the following
error: "E: Internal Error, No file name for desktop-base:amd64".
Strange that it shows as being installed in synaptic, however, pulls
an error each time I install or upgrade a program.

Also noticed that non-free driver is still being recommended as it
does with Debian when loading. Example, it notices the Radeon graphics
card (AMD64), and that the non-free driver is not installed. Does the
same for VirtualBox?

As an FYI: I've kept an eye on gNewsense for some time, however, the
prior old packages were a deterrent. Started with Ubuntu, then Debian,
Crunchbang, Trisquel (which I really liked, except I did not feel
comfortable with the Ubuntu additions), came back to gNewsense, since
it makes the most sense to base it on Debian stable!

You mean it warns about non-free drivers at boot time? What message are
you getting?

Errors on boot:

Had to write this down as fast I could so it should express the
content or the error, however, I do not think it is the complete error
message:

[Warning] Error Radeon kernel R600 or later requires non-free firmware
not installed

[Warning] Virtualbox additions not in virtual machine

Great fix on desktop-base!

Does it perhaps refer to firmware-linux-nonfree?

[Warning] Virtualbox additions not in virtual machine
I see this when I use a Linux-libre kernel, but not with Ucclia's own
kernel.

Hello,

Any plans on adding GNU IceCat, or would we need to compile ourselves?

Our Iceweasel will be modified for freedom and privacy. It won't have
IceCat's default addons installed, but it will point to Gnuzilla's list
of addons.

I like IceCat, and I tried compile it but there is problem with glibc
version:

/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.14' not found
(required by /home/dani/Downloads/icecat/libnspr4.so)
Couldn't load XPCOM.

Plataform: Linux gnewsense 3.2.0-4gnewsense1-amd64
Version: Ucclia

I'll create a package for IceCat and share it in future.

The advantage of modifying Iceweasel is that it has less dependency
problems because Debian already took care of that. And we're aiming to
be selfhosting, so that includes build dependencies.

I encourage third party repos if they stick to free software. They
could be a way to sneak in new packages (or versions) because they
don't have to be selfhosting. :)
